The omicron variant is overtaking delta rapidly in the UK and will be the major strain in weeks. The rest of the world may follow the same pattern.

European Hospitalizations Are on Vacation. They haven't gone up.
the data suggests that the UK and the Netherlands are in an omicron surge with more cases but few deaths and hospitalizations. I’m not sure what’s going on in South Africa, but it may have a mix of delta and omicron.

A Christmas Gift From Omicron?
Omicron is so contagious that it seems likely to infect most of the world’s population, making many people sick but killing few.
Omicron may “immunize” people against delta and other more deadly forms of coronavirus.
This is not as far-fetched as it seems. The mild cowpox virus protects against the curse of smallpox. Oral polio vaccine may travel from person to person and protect unimmunized people against polio.
Then again, omicron may be just another virus, making us sick and leaving us none the better for it.
